Reviews

I received a copy of your book as a gift prior to the book being made public and am very impressed! As an elementary school librarian, we do not have many, if at all, books on fossil fuels available to our younger students. I look forward to sharing “Dexter’s Adventures” with my students as well as the worksheets when they become available! Thank you.

“Dexter’s Adventures” takes readers of all ages through the ABCs of fossil fuels in a fun and educational way.

Littleton-area author Floyd Trujillo has deployed his family dog Dexter, a King Charles retriever, and his dinosaur friends to teach the alphabet and the many ways fossil fuels make our standard of living high. The book is well-written and carefully edited — educational elements in themselves.

Trujillo has deep roots in the West. One relative was married to frontiersman Kit Carson, and his family tree stretches back 400 years in the region. He spent his career in the oil and gas industry and is a lifelong conservationist. Illustrator Argus Prajogo does a wonderful job of helping tell the tale by incorporating familiar landmarks, playful dinosaurs and the Trujillo family and pets.

This is more than a children’s book: Adults might be surprised at many of the beneficial products made from oil and gas. Intellectually curious readers will welcome a different perspective, one founded in fact, not fear.

As an energy lawyer, I am thrilled to see a book – particularly one for younger kids – that does such a terrific job of explaining the realities of the foundational role fossil fuels play in everyday life in the United States.

Specifically, this book helps children (and hopefully their parents) understand that while fossil fuels are certainly used for transportation and energy generation, the next largest use of fossil fuels remains in manufacturing – everything from cell phones and clothes to steel and plastics. In other words, while the world moves towards the discontinuation of fossil fuel use, this book will help folks grasp the concept that while this is a laudable, important and reachable goal, the use of fossil fuels around the globe is so ubiquitous in all things that transitioning away from fossil fuels is not as simple as saying it or flipping a switch somewhere – in order to ensure energy, transportation, and manufacturing continuity, such transition should be undertaken in a studied, measured and reasonable way. Horses didn’t simply disappear the day Henry Ford’s first Model T rolled out of the factory . . .

This is Brilliant! Fossil fuels are both critical to everything we do but also taken for granted by most who use them. A book like this is so important in helping educate children (and adults!) about the importance of fossil fuels and will hopefully inspire a new generation of talent to enter the world’s most exciting industry!

Thank you for giving me a copy of your children’s picture book – the ‘ABCs of Fossil Fuels’. It is brilliantly written in poetry form! The graphics are extraordinary – the time, thought and mastery of the graphics are extremely well done. Every single page is perfect. I loved the Y page and yoga! Too funny! I read your book with our 9-year-old granddaughter, and she couldn’t wait to find the dinosaur before me! I loved the Trujillo Family Tree! Floyd, I can’t find enough words to describe this book. Even the paper is upgraded. You have been at the ‘tip of the spear’ of truth.

The Honorable Ramey Johnson, Former Colorado State Representative
